The Extraordinary Ideas Grants support innovative and creative cross-disciplinary research and activities that result from collaboration across programs, departments, and colleges.

HEERF RSCA Recover Research Award, San Francisco State University, 2021 ($7,968)

Supports faculty who have demonstrated a need for research support to recover from COVID-19 related delays or cessations of scholarly work.              

CHSS Conference Travel Award, San Francisco State University, 2021 ($1,000)

Presentation at the Western Society of Criminology’s Annual Conference.           

The American-Scandinavian Foundation Grant, the American Scandinavian Foundation, 2020-2021 ($5,000)

The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) is the leading cultural and educational link between the U.S. and Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The grant funds research or creative arts projects in the Scandinavian countries.

Presidential Award for Probationary Faculty, San Francisco State University, 2020

Leave spring 2021 to collect data for a research project on Gruvberget in Sweden; an open correctional institution that provides recreation for incarcerated people.

Lund University Book Fund, Lund University, 2020 (£10,000)

Grant to publish the book Victim Support and the Welfare State as open access.

High Impact Quality Learning and Teaching Course Redesign Project (PI, Dr. Rekia Jibrin), San Francisco State University, 2020 $9,000 ($1,500 per faculty participant)

The grant targets high-impact courses that are critical for student success and progress to degree. The goal of our project was to create a menu of online modules for CJ 330GW “Research Methods.”

Sweden Victim Support Sweden: Formulation, Questions, and Focus, the Crime Victim Fund, Government Research Grant (PI, Dr. Kerstin Svensson), 2013-2017 (SEK 2.3 million)

The project examines the rise and evolution of non-governmental victim assistance programs in Sweden. The project is based on archival material from Victim Support Sweden and interviews with key figures in the organization.

Lars Hierta Memorial Foundation, 2007, 2008, 2015, 2016 (SEK 70,000)

Provides scholarships to researchers across all fields.

The Burmeister Award, The Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT), 2015

Honors a Division of Distance Learning sponsored presentation proposal at the AECT annual meeting that 1) receives the highest average rating from peer-reviewers and 2) leads to the improvement of distance education.

Teacher of the Year, Stockholm University, 2010 (SEK 50,000)

Honors one teacher annually from each of the four faculties (out of approximately 4,000 teachers in 75 departments). Stockholm University honors the winners at the annual conferment ceremony in Stockholm City Hall. First teacher in the field of social work to receive this award.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences Scholarship, 2009 (SEK 80,000)

Promotes the sciences and strengthens their influence in society. Each year the Academy awards a number of scholarships, grants, and prizes, including the Nobel Prizes.

Innovation in Teaching with Technology Award, University of San Francisco, 2009 ($500)

This award honors two faculty members who have demonstrated innovative uses of technology in education.

Crime Victims and the Social Services, the Crime Victim Fund, Government Research Grant (PI, Dr. Anna Hollander), 2005-2008 (SEK 1.9 million)

The project examines the social services’ responsibility for crime victims. The project is based on legislative material and focus groups with social workers.

The Iris Jonzén-Sandbloms and Greta Jonzéns Foundation (Iris Scholarship), 2007 (SEK 100,000)

Supports women with extraordinary ambitions and skills. The award is given to women who contribute to progress and development, not only for themselves but also for being a role model to others.

The Sweden-America Foundation Scholarship, 2007 ($10,000)

Promotes the exchange of scientific experiences between Sweden and the United States. Crown Princess Victoria is the honorary chairman and presents the awards at the foundation’s annual meeting.
