New Article in the British Journal of Criminology

Our new article Crime victims, immigrants and social welfare: Creating the racialized other in Sweden is now published in the British Journal of Criminology (open access). This study explores the role of immigration and racialization in creating the first Swedish victim support centre in the early 1980s. We show that victim support centres were one of the mechanisms to continue to defend the ideals of the Swedish welfare state, but to do so in ways that prevented incursions within Swedish racial homogeneity from the outside.

I am especially excited about this article for a number of reason. First, I have been dreaming about publishing in BJC since I started my doctoral program. It is one of the top journals in the field.

Second, and most importantly, a brilliant undergraduate student, Fia, is the first author. Fia just graduated with a law degree from Uppsala University in Sweden. We started working on the article in fall 2019 when Fia was an exchange student at SFSU. We spend countless of hours in my office analyzing the data. It is quite remarkable for a undergraduate student to publish in such a highly ranked journal.

Fia also took my Research Methods class. That year, I took the class to the American Society of Criminology’s annual conference. It was really an amazing experience and a unique opportunity for the students.
